Interview with Sheikh Ghamdi

Rough English Translation (If you have corrections, please notify us)

Is it possible to tell us about yourself? About your studies? And about your appointment as Imam of Masjid ul-Haram? And when did that happen?
First of all, I would like to thank you my dear brother for this favour and this meeting and I ask Allah swt to make this meeting full of barakah.
As for me, My name is Khalid bin Ali Al-Ghamdi. I was born in Makka tul Mukarrama Allah honour it and guard it. My elementary, middle, secondary as well as university studies were all in Makkah All praises be to Allah.

And I graduated from the University of Ummul Qurra from college of Dawah and Usool Ad-Deen in the department of writers and sunnah. I obtained a masters in recitation and a doctorate in tafseer All praises be to Allah.

I was appointed as President of the department of recitation from a long time, then I was appointed as a judge in the college of usool ad-deen til now and this is the third position for me; a judge of the college.
As for my appointment as Imam of Masjid ul-Haram, it was in 25th dhul-Hijjah 1428 with the help of Allah azza wa jall. And this is the greatest honour, the honour Allah alone gave me and that is leading the Muslims in the Sacred Place in Makkah (i.e. Masjid ul-Haram)

Among those whom I thank, firstly and lastly I thank Allah subhanu waTala for this great favour. Then I want to thank the leaders of the Affairs, May Allah reward them abundtandly) for this confidence which they placed in me and thought the best of me, InshAllah I will not fail everyone. As I thanked them, I must thank my parents who have had a significant impact in the processes/stages of my life. As I must thank my wife, my children and those who have had an impact in what I have and this is all from the blessings of Allah.

From the Imam of Masjid Al-Amerra, Sheikha Al-Khalidiyya to the Imam of Masjid ul-Haram, what was your feeling when you heard the news?
I am not able to describe my feelings because it is something indescribable. Truly it is a great command because I was the Imam of a small masjid with a limited number of Musalleen. As for now, I have become the leader, leading salaat for a hundred thousand muslims. And in the days of Hajj, I have lead salaat for a million people. This command is not believable and is not describable which is why I am not able to describe this feeling. And I am confident that this is a bounty from Allah azza wa jall and I can not thank him enough. And I thank Allah for what I performed; this great blessing which is the leading of the Muslims in this place which is the most sacred place, the most pure place on the surface of this earth. All praises are to the Lord of the Universe and there is nothing like Him.

Was being the Imam of Masjid-ul-Haram a desire for you? Yes, this was my desire and there is no doubt that I wanted to be in this place, leading the people, leading a million people in salaat. But this gift came to me from Allah without me being asked, or questioned or long sought. This was the qismat of from Allah, the destiny which Allah subhanu waTala had written for me.

Before I was the Imam of Haram, I lead people in a small Masjid for about 5 years. And (then) I led people in the hajj season and you know that the small masjid was a thumbnail image in comparison to Haram in the hajj season. All praises be to Allah, when I was appointed in the Haram, I had experience in leading lots of Musalleen (those who pray)

What was the first salaat that you led in the Haram? When was it? What was your feeling when you led the first salaat in the haram? The first salaat was salaat Adh-Dhuhr was on Wednesday the 23rd of Dhul-Hajjah 1428. As for the first jahriyya salaat, it was Salaat ul-Ishaa on Sunday 27th of Dhul-Hajjah 1428.
It was a strange setting that I read in Salaat ul-Ishaa in the first salaat for me the words of Alalh in Surat Yunus (58. Say: “In the Bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islam and the Qur’an); - therein let them rejoice.” That is better than what (the wealth) they amass.) and this was a strange setting but I did not purposely choose it; it came from Allah swt

As for my feelings, it was scary, strange and wonderful; I felt my heart will come out of its place but the firmness of Allah subhanu waTala kept me firm. Because this was the first salaat when a thousand hujjaj (pilgrims) prayed behind me. When I gave the first takbeer, I felt a strange feeling of fear and dreadfulness but when I began the recitation of Fatiha and verses from Surat Yunus I felt that things began to calm down All praises be to Allah and this is all from Allah subhanu waTala.

What is the reason for your visit to South Africa? It is an invitation from the Muslims in South Africa, especially in Durban from the Establishment of the Helpers and from all the Muslims in Johannesburg and in Cape Town. And these cities are the ones which I will be visiting with the permission of Allah and I will visit the Muslims in it. Where an invitation has been presented to all the Muslims and they have accepted it. I was nominated by the General Presidency of the Affairs of the Haramain Alhamdulillah so I came here for Dawah and I ask Allah to produce its fruits InshaAllah.

Sheikh Shuraim interview

What was your method in memorizing the Book of Allah? And how long did it take you to memorize it?
My method for memorizing was memorizing/revising on my own since there were no halaqas for memorizing the Qur’an wide spread, nor was there any commitment to a disciplined method for memorizing the Qur’an. So I was not given a specific amount for memorizing. Perhaps sometimes I memorized a whole hizb in one day and other times I memorized a part of a page but the period for memorizing did not exceed 6 months and it was the year 1404

When was your first khutbah and how did you prepare for it?
My first khutbah was in the month of Shawwal and it was the first Friday of the month. My preparation was easy as the subject of the khutbah is heard a lot and it (the subject) was continuing good deeds after Ramadhan and being steadfast on obeying.

What is the method in the opinion of the Sheikh to memorize the Qur’an Al-Kareem?
There isn’t a specific method that a person must adhere to for memorizing/preserving the Quran since abilities vary and people are not equal (not the same) in memorizing as they are not the same in saving time. What I think is that every person should evaluate his conditions and recognize his abilities and then construct a method appropriate for him in memrozing over a period of time. But I am stressing that reading a lot the Qur’an directly from the Mushaf is among the biggest reasons calling to memorizing it quickly and thus listenting to it on the radio.

We find that Sheikh Saud has many of his lectures in the Kingdom and we notice a few of his lectures are not shown on TV..what is the reason?
(Please translate answer)

What are the reasons for the appointment of a lot of Imams?
The Haraam needs a sufficient number of Imams to look over its status and importance and the need to provide a sufficient number to cover the times and events which are the causes of the need for their presence in the Haraam

Sheikh Saud has traveled to a number of countries for the call to Allah .. tell us May Allah protect you about your trips to the call..
The talk about travels is long and this is not the place (to discuss) its details but I can mention from the countrires which I have visited for the purpose of an official invitation (Britian, Scotland, Indonesia, South Africa, Rais Al-Khayma, Sharjah, Qatar)

Does Sheikh Saud continue the gathering of duroos in the Haraam now? And What is the Duroos on
The Duroos (lessons) have stopped for now because of academic commitments. As for the Duroos which have been delivered in Masjid Al-Haraaam, they are 1) explanation of the >>>> 2) Explanations of Abbreviations in Fiqh 3) Explanations of the fundamentals of >>> 4) Explanations of the >>> of Ibn Abee Dawood 5) explanations of >>>>> 6) Explanations of the system of >>>>> in science of Qur’an and Principles of Tafseer 7) Explanations of >>>>>> 8) Explanations of >>>>>

What is the reason for so few qunoots in the past years in Ramadhan?
The reason for that is that my desire is not for qunoot

Why do you answer (Allah preserve you) with uncertainty against the seeking Shari knowledge under the pretext of fear from being unable to applying knowledge based on the Hadith of Jabir bin Zaid where the Propet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (rought translation: Woe upon he who knows but does not practice seven times and woe on he knows not and practices not once)
This hadith is not especially for seeking knowledge rather it includes everything you know from the commandments of the religion thus it (the hadith) is not in accordance with it, hence there is no excuse to escape from the Shari knowledge of this hadith.

We have noticed recently in the past, the absence of Sheikh Muhammad As-Subbayl from Imamat in Al-Haraam…what is the reason?
I am not informed with the apparent reason for that except that the Sheikh (May Allah guard him and protect him) has advanced in age and perhaps ……….

What do you say, May Allah bless you, about the one who describes the Khutbahs of Sheikh Saud Ash-Shuraim as difficult?
I don’t know what is to be difficult because who is to determine difficulty? But we agree that minds are different and understading vary great for that reason we say a difficult khutbah is that which we can not understand at first or we are not able to determine what is being said. As for the appearance of some western words with the knowledge originating in this subject, this is apparent. You read the verses of the Qur’an and you know it is about Jannah and its pleases but you do not know some of its descriptions in detail.

In your opinion, Is there a lack of preachers to guide young people?
Yes, there are few important exerting preachers who exert because preaching can not occur with who we have (i.e. the number of preachers are not sufficient)

Is there a Qari or Khateeb whom you love to listen to?
I listen to a lot of the Qaris and Khateebs but I do not have a specific one for listening but what appears on the radio.

What is hardest position which you still hang to in your opinion? And are there any positions for you with the Ulama?
The hardest standing is that many forget one another but do not bring me anything at this time. I do now know what the positions with the Ulama are, but do you want an embarrassing position or a specific position or a position for all circumstances which is not without an inherent position of the ulama

His last words….this is the commandment for all Imams which is a hadith of the Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him [more or less: (Each of you is a shepherd and each of you is responsible for his flock)]. So all the rulers and scholars and ministers and fathers and mothers and questionnaires should fear Allah in and should aspire to summon the law of Allah in all aspects of their lives in order to be happy in the Hereafter and Allah.

Few parts missing ,it will be great if someone can translate it.

Interview with Sheikh Saud As-Shuraim

Thanks to brother Abdul Majid From Qatar For fixing Arabic text.

Translation-
This is an interview with SS published in a Qatari newspaper "Al watan"so today our guest is Sheikh Saud bin Ibrahim al Shuraim.he is imam and khateeb of masjid al haram,a very prominent personality of the islamic world, a dignified researcher in fiqh,a judge and a poet,he has many trips in many countries,he is a good writer, has written many books on aqeedah and stuff....well the recitation of quran kareem in his melodious voice is very famous and there may not beany muslim home where he is not listen to...so lets start ...1st
Q:what were your feelings when you were made the imam of the haram al makky?
SS says:My acceptance as an imam of haram was not something that was surprise and happened at once rather it was a long process,it took much time...and before being appointed as an imam,i used to dream of being so and indeed it is a great blessing of Allah (SWT) to be an imam of haram .i ask Him to guide me on the path of gratefulness..
2nd Q:you people give khutbah in haram,so how do you compose it and how do you deliever?
SS says:there is no particular way for it,moreover the khutbah are often delievered according to the circumstances/current affairs...and for me, it is just once in a month when i have to give khutbah and it doesnt mean that i have such a long time to compose it because i dont know the topic unless the imam before me has given his khutbah as the khutbah is related to the previous one...moreover it is necessary to avoid such a situation that i may repeat the previous topics...i remember what Abdul Malik bin Marwan said"the manabir(probably giving khotab)has made me old..imagine that about a person who was a caliph and had excellent oratory skills!so what about a person who is much more less efficient?the matter needs assistance from Allah (swt).
3rd Q: it is seen that Dr. Saud does not deleiver much public lectures and stuff....whats the reason?would you plz explain?
SS says:yes you are right and this is because i am too busy and i dont leave Makkah due to imamah and i consider my friday khutbah as a public lecture.as far as my lectures out of the K.S.A are concerned ,they are much more in number than the lectures in the KSA.and i give religious sermons at masjid al haram three days in a week after fajr salah from the books(mentioned in the arabic text)
4th Q:were you influenced by some particular qari(reciter) or khateeb?what do you think when you listen to the reciters who copy you?
SS says:no,i am not influenced by some particular khateeb...but sometimes i like some of the khutab by some khateebs.and as for reciters i am not influenced by some particular reciter..and i have no objection on the ones who copy me but i think one should not follow/copy some reciter instead one should make ones own way of reciting...
5th q: Memorisation of quran and its recitation have a great impact on the khotab?so when did you complete your hifz and to whom you are indebted to in this regard?
SS says:i completed my hifz in the last years of sec. school and it was due to my struggle after the grace of Allah..and after hifz i even did the revision myself...didnt acquire assistance from the shuyookh except in the normal classes at uni.So i thank to allah (swt)
6th Q:whats the role of Dr.Saud's wife in his academical and da3awi success?
SS says:before i say something about my wife, i cant forget my mothers love and mercy for me in my childhood and youth as well.as she raised me in orphanage in childhood...her love is a tonic for me.May Allah shower His mercy upon her as she did with me when i was a child.and as for my wife, she has proven herself to be a best companion for me in happiness and sorrow..she is there when i need her.cheers me up and tries her best to lighten my sorrows.May Allah include this in her good deeds.

Interview with Muezzin Sheikh Ahmed Ali Mullah

MAKKAH, October 21, 2005 – Azaan or call for prayers is a major element of a Muslim's life, stemming from the fact that praying is the very second pillar of the Islamic faith's five pillars. Muezzin or caller for prayers at any mosque is consequently a significant religious job that takes more importance when that mosque is Masjid Al-Haram, one of the most sacred sites of Islam. Sheikh Ali Ahmed Mullah has been calling for prayers in Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah – towards which Muslims from the four corners of the globe direct their faces and hearts five times a day when they pray -- since he was 14 years old. As a result of being muezzin in Al-Masjid Al-Haram, Sheikh Ali Ahmed Mullah has gained a pan-Islamic fame.

IslamOnline.net met Sheikh Ali Ahmed Mullah, whose warm and lovely voice can be easily discerned by Muslims when it is prayer time. O, what did Sheikh Ali Ahmed Mullah have to say about his 35-year-long experience as a Muezzin.

Question (Q): How did your long journey with azaan in Masjid Al-Haram start?

Answer (A): I've started as a muezzin when I was only 14. At first, I was an assistant muezzin as there were no microphones and more than one muezzin had to repeat the azaan to make sure it reaches all quarters of Al-Haram.

Q: Who taught you to be muezzin?

A: There were many muezzins among my family members who taught me how to be a good muezzin, and when time was ripe, I joined Al-Haram as a co-muezzin. I was much influenced by my uncle Sheikh Abdel Rahman Ali Mullah.

Q: Did you practice azaan before officially joining Masjid Al-Haram?

A: Yes, I was the muezzin during school trips and I always enjoyed distinguished voice tones, in addition to the experience in employing such tones. I gained that experience from my uncle and other muezzins at Al-Masjid Al-Haram. I became my school’s regular muezzin. Azaan gives me some sort of spiritual satisfaction I always feel each time I call for prayers.

Q: Do you work on passing on the Muezzin job to your sons?

A: In my case, I was influenced by the elder members of my family. My eldest son Atef has shown much interest in becoming muezzin and was influenced by me. But he is busy with his business.

Q: Tell us about muezzins and imams of Al-Haram.

A: I have come by a host of marvelous people in this score. To begin with, I liked a lot Sheikh Abul Simh and his brother. Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamid, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Khalify, Sheikh Abdur Rahman As Sudais and the current imams, they are a group of great people one can learn a lot by remaining near to them.

Q: What is the overall number of muezzins now in Al-Haram?

A: We used to be six, but now, with microphones, there are three muezzins at a time; one calls for prayers, one calls for Iqamah, the second call for prayer, with a total number of 16 muezzins serving in Al-Masjid Al-Haram.

Q: Do Muezzins face funny situations?

A: I believe one in my place, surrounded by thousands of worshipers, must have so many of such incidents. But I can not forget repeated requests by some visitors of Al-Haram for Umra or Hajj to call for prayers.

I explain to them it is impossible because of regulations and that such procedures are systematic. They usually get angry, insisting they are muezzins back home. Such incidents show Muslims’ affection for the holy mosque.

One day, I saw a mad man who was imitating me and repeating azaan. When he was heading for the Minaret where I was calling for prayers, I stopped Azaan and seized the man not to hurt himself. I remained with him till guards came and took him away in peace.

Also when I was working as a teacher, many of the students wanted me to listen to their azaan, trying to imitate my voice. I encourage them.

Q: What about your fans?

A: Many pilgrims come to visit me at home or call me to know when I'll be saying the azaan in Al-Haram. Some youngsters send me recordings of azaan asking for my feedback. One day, a person called me and told me he had 150 cassettes of my azaan saying he wanted to train to have the same tone of voice.

Q: What about your foreign tours to inaugurate mosques in western states?

A: I always feel the support of Muslims there during calling for prayers during the inauguration of mosques built by late king Fahd bin Abdul Aziz in some European states.

Q: How did you set azaan times in the past?

A: There was a form of a solar clock where you have a piece of stone and a spike and a piece of robe. The piece of stone is scaled similar to the hands of a modern clock. That was a way of knowing times of azaan.

It was also the task of one family in Makkah, Al-Raiyss family, to follow up the matter and tell the differences between prayer times in summer and winter. When they call for prayers, every body else follows.

Q: Usually Muezzins blow in the microphone before using it, why?

A: It is usually the case, especially before Maghrib prayer in Ramadan, to make sure they are working properly and alarm worshippers on iftar time.

Q: Do you have any other activities or hobbies?

A: Yes, of course. I used to have many hobbies, mainly boy scouting. We used to assist Hajj and Umrah performers during the rituals in Ramadan. Now, I only have my business to run, besides my work as muezzin.

Sheikh Kalbani on NYTimes

“Any qualified individual, no matter what his color, no matter where from, will have a chance to be a leader, for his good and The king is trying to tell everybody that he wants to rule this land as one nation, with no racism and no segregation.” SHEIK ADIL KALBANI

TWO years ago, Sheik Adil Kalbani dreamed that he had become an imam at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.
Waking up, he dismissed the dream as a temptation to vanity. Although he is known for his fine voice, Sheik Adil is black, and the son of a poor immigrant from the Persian Gulf. Leading prayers at the Grand Mosque is an extraordinary honor, usually reserved for pure-blooded Arabs from the Saudi heartland.
So he was taken aback when the phone rang last September and a voice told him that King Abdullah had chosen him as the first black man to lead prayers in Mecca. Days later Sheik Adil’s unmistakably African features and his deep baritone voice, echoing musically through the Grand Mosque, were broadcast by satellite TV to hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world.
Since then, Sheik Adil has been half-jokingly dubbed the “Saudi Obama.” Prominent imams are celebrities in this deeply religious country, and many have hailed his selection as more evidence of King Abdullah’s cautious efforts to move Saudi Arabia toward greater openness and tolerance in the past few years.
“The king is trying to tell everybody that he wants to rule this land as one nation, with no racism and no segregation,” said Sheik Adil, a heavyset and long-bearded man of 49 who has been an imam at a Riyadh mosque for 20 years. “Any qualified individual, no matter what his color, no matter where from, will have a chance to be a leader, for his good and his country’s good.”
Officially, it was his skill at reciting the Koran that won him the position, which he carries out — like the Grand Mosque’s eight other prayer leaders — only during the holy month of Ramadan. But the racial significance of the king’s gesture was unmistakable.
Sheik Adil, like most Saudis, is quick to caution that any racism here is not the fault of Islam, which preaches egalitarianism. The Prophet Muhammad himself, who founded the religion here 1,400 years ago, had black companions.
“Our Islamic history has so many famous black people,” said the imam, as he sat leaning his arm on a cushion in the reception room of his home. “It is not like the West.”
It is also true that Saudi Arabia is far more ethnically diverse than most Westerners realize. Saudis with Malaysian or African features are a common sight along the kingdom’s west coast, the descendants of pilgrims who came here over the centuries and ended up staying. Many have prospered and even attained high positions through links to the royal family. Bandar bin Sultan, the former Saudi ambassador to the United States, is the son of Prince Sultan and a dark-skinned concubine from southern Saudi Arabia.
But slavery was practiced here too, and was abolished only in 1962. Many traditional Arabs from Nejd, the central Saudi heartland, used to refer to all outsiders as “tarsh al bahr” — vomit from the sea. People of African descent still face some discrimination, as do most immigrants, even from other Arab countries. Many Saudis complain that the kingdom is still far too dominated by Nejd, the homeland of the royal family. There are nonracial forms of discrimination too, and many Shiite Muslims, a substantial minority, say they are not treated fairly.
“The prophet told us that social classes will remain, because of human nature,” Sheik Adil said gravely. “These are part of the pre-Islamic practices that persist.”
BLACK skin is not the only social obstacle Sheik Adil has overcome. His father came to Saudi Arabia in the 1950s from Ras al Khaima, in what is now the United Arab Emirates, and obtained a job as a low-level government clerk. The family had little money, and after finishing high school, Adil took a job with Saudi Arabian Airlines while attending night classes at King Saud University.
