Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, imam and khateeb of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, has been appointed head of the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques with the rank of a minister, a Royal Court announcement said yesterday.

Al-Sudais, a learned Islamic scholar, replaces Sheikh Saleh Al-Hosain, who had requested higher authorities to relieve him from the position. Sheikh Al-Sudais is known for his melodious Qur’an recitation that has inspired Muslim faithful across the world.

“We have accepted the request of Sheikh Saleh Al-Hosain to be relieved of his position as head of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques because of health reasons and appointed Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais in his place,” Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah said in a royal decree.

Born in 1382H in Riyadh, Al-Sudais memorized the whole Qur’an when he was 12 under the supervision of Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Firyan. He graduated from the Faculty of Shariah in Riyadh in 1403H.

Sheikh Saleh Al-Nasser, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh (present mufti), Sheikh Saleh Al-Atram, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Jibrin and Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Dawood are some of his teachers. He was also closely associated with former mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Binbaz.

In 1404H, Sheikh Al-Sudais was appointed imam and khateeb of the Grand Mosque. In 1408H he received his master’s degree from Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh. He worked as a lecturer at the College of Shariah in Umm Al-Qura University, which awarded him a doctorate degree in 1416H.

Sheikh Al-Sudais used to deliver lectures on various Islamic topics such as Islamic faith, jurisprudence, Qur’an commentary and Hadith at the Grand Mosque. He also gave Islamic rulings on various issues presented by pilgrims during the Haj season.

He has delivered several lectures inside and outside the Kingdom. During the past two years he visited India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Britain. He has published several research papers on various topics including a message to Muslim women.

Last year, Al-Sudais visited the Higher Institute for Advanced Islamic Studies in Malaysia where he gave a lecture on Islamic civilization in the backdrop of modern challenges. He said Islam was facing challenges from within and outside the Muslim community.

Mashallah. What are the responsibilities regarding this position and also who is Shaykh Salih al husayn ?

Hamzah Imtiaz said...

Basically, Shaykh Sudais is now in charge of the AFFAIRS of both the Haramain. It is a lot of work and thereby we might not be seeing him a lot anymore. He will not be leading in Masjid Nabwi, however, he is in charge of both the Haramain. Meaning that he is in charge of the different affairs: the Duroos that go on there, the Muadhins that are there, the Imams that are there, any problems in the Haram. Kind of like the job of a principal in a school. And Allah knows best.

Shiekh Saalih al husayn is a great Shiekh, He is commonly known as Saalih bin Humaid. few years ago he would read all the Fajrs in Makkah al Mukarramah. His recital was not so fancy but had good Tajweed. His Sunni and not Shia. Chief Imams duties is mostly office work. Mabruk Shiekh Sudais! He deserves the Position. I was in Makkah MukaramAh last week n when Shiekh Sudais reads you can just see people so happy, he runs your emotions! Written by Imam Zeeyad. Australia

Sheikh Sudais loves reading in the Haram. No amount of work can Stop him inshallah.

Answering the question of the first brother, Sheikh Saleh Al husayn isnt the imam at madina. He was a learned sheikh from makka appointed by the late king fahad as the president of the haram adter the move of sheikh saleh al humaid. The imam at madina is stil sheikh husaain al sheikh.

i hope sheikh sudais will install sheikh huzaify back as imam.

Just a correction to the brother who stated Sheikh Humaid and Sheikh Husayn are the same, they are not. Sheikh Saalih al Husayn is not commonly known as Sheikh Saalih al Humaid, and if he is, then it is not true. Also, Sheikh Humaid does lead Fajr that much, Sheikh Juhany has been leading more in the last few years and Sheikh Shuraim used to before that, since Sheikh Humaid was living in Riyaadh.

How do you know whether u or sheikh Sudais will live until Ramadhaan rather read your sallah now it will help guessing whose gonna read in Ramadhaan wont help

not being bad just a death reminder

Salih said...

My congratulations to his eminency may Allah Help him to succeed in his new mission! Sheikh Sudais deserves everything and I wonder whether he'll continue to lead prayers in Haram otherwise I miss him greatly even if I live far away from mecca in Senegal! Again may Allah make his work easier amine!

last Ramadan shaikh Juhany and shaikh mahir were leading Taraweeh. Shaikh Sudais lead tahajjud 'night' prayers.
Although it will be sad in case Shaikh Sudais stops leading prayers regularly but on the bright There are MashAllah so many nice imams in Makkah and when praying no place is better than Allah's house! So no need to be sad after all

MashALLAH, many Congrats to Sheikh Sudais! May ALLAH cure Sheikh Saleh Al-Hosain

Im confused now: So that person sick is NOT the imam in Medina (Sheikh Hussian Ale Sheikh) and is Sheikh Humaid who asked to be relieved of his duties?
HR please Help me out. Thanks

- HR Staff - said...

No! Like I said earlier: Sheikh Saalih al Husain and Sheikh Saalih al Humaid are different people. Sheikh Saalih al Husain asked to be relieved, none of the Haramain Imaams have stepped down. :)

May Allah give Sheikh Sudais long, happy and healthy life with increasing imaan so he will lead salats in Haram as regular and also in Ramadan.

May Allah cure Sheikh Husain quickly. I'm delighted for Sheikh Sudais. This is indeed an honourable position! May Allah help him perform his tasks to the best of his abilities without any problems. Ameen.
However, I sincerely hope that this new position doesnot affect his rota and that we continue to hear his melodious recitations throughout the year. Already we are deprived of hearing Sheikh Shuraim in regular prayers. It would be sad for the public if sheikh Sudais also confines his appearances at the Grand Mosque and the legendary duo of Sheikh Shuraim and Sudais would not be heard very frequently; Although both are still reciting magnificently these days..MashaAllah!

I hope that InshaAllah he will continue to lead prayer in Haram. Sheikh Sudais is attach with Haram. No thing can stop him to lead prayer in Haram.
