JEDDAH – Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah Aal Al-Sheikh, Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, has said the day of fasting for Ashoura, Muharram 10, falls on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Sheikh Aal Al-Sheikh called this a way out of arguments that the crescent was not sighted to mark the beginning of Muharram. He said Saturday therefore was the last day of Dhul Hijjah and Sunday the first of Muharram. Hence, the 9th and 10th of Muharram – days on which Muslims are recommended to fast – fall on Monday (Dec. 5) and Tuesday (Dec. 6) respectively.

Re second post. Originally, Saudi announced 29 days of Dhul Hijjah due to claims that the moon was sighted. According to that information, Ashoora should have been on Monday. However, it became apparent that the moon wasnt sighted, and the news of moon sighting was incorrect, and therefore, the calendar was one day ahead. That's why the Grand Mufti of Saudi Sheikh Abdul Azis Ale Sheikh released a statement saying that there were 30 days in Dhul Hijjah as the moon was not sighted. This means that Ashoora is on Tuesday.
