Questions & Answers

Q. I want to know who chooses the Imams to lead daily prayers and taraweeh? I mean not who sorts out the rota of which Imam reads a particular prayer. I mean like who selects Imams to become the Imam of Haramain? When I went to Saudi for Umrah people say the King chooses. Is this true and how come if there are other recitors that read nice like Abdul Walee al arkani then how come he is not as Haram Imam or will he get a chance once he noticed by someone?

IT must be the king, because i remember reading Sheikh Kalbani's interview where he said that the King had chosen him.

انا اري ان اختيار الائمة يكون باختيار الملك حيث ان اغلب قصص التحاق الائمة بالحرمين جاءت عن طريق ارادة الملك

there is a group who you send your application too if you want to become an imam. they deceide, but yes the king does have the last say and its up to him. you need to be from Makkah in order to be a haramain imam. And Allah knows best, forgive me for any mistakes i have made.

Asalamu Alakum,

It all depends on how much knwoledge they have. Know look at sheikh Kalbani his recitation isnt the best but he one of the best islamic scholars now a days, So the more knowledgeable you are, the better chance you have of becoming Imam of Masjid Al Haram

There is Speific ruls for the imams and, simply Al Arkanai doesn't match those rules.

about the rota thing i dunno and about selecting i dunno...... but I dont think its easy to select 'any' recitor...

Yes Abdul Arkani is excellent MashAllah... but so is Abu Bakr Shatri, Ahmed Ajmy and so on...

Being a imam of Haram, u need experience, excellent knowledge of Islam, excellent tajweed and so on...

the Imam's of Haram are chosen wisely.... its very hard to find Imam's that has all the qualities named above...

But MashAllah these current Imams are serving at the Haram excellently!

all i can say that there is no match for the old pair - Sheikhain-Sheikh Sudais and Sheikh Shuraim, be it the new imams or who so ever. These 2, mashaAllah are especially God gifted in their emotional, heartwarming recitations.

Anonymous said...

i think the king but they have condition to be saudi & not from other countries..allah knows best ..

Absolutly rght Sheikh Sudais nd Sheikh Shuraim r just unbeatable, that's why Allah has given such a gr8 tag team with those 2 pair 4 so many year's in Masjidil Haram nd they really do touch people's heart when they recite.

Selecting an imam is a tough job. they have a very tough criteria for it. They monitor these imam's day and night, and look for how pious these imams are..and how many sunnah's they follow, and how many they leave, etc.. i personally know sheikh aadil, and he was very pious, and he did not get selected cause of his personal matters with the king(as said in someones post).

The Grand mufti of saudi arabia, sheikh abdul aziz, presents these names to the king, and the king then decides.

For example, one imam of Haram was removed due to him moving too frequently while praying.(i'm not sure as to which one, so i'm not going to take any names).

And the imam's DON'T have to be from makkah. Sudais and Kalbani are from Riyadh.

only SAUDI CITIZENS r made imam, shaykh abdul wali arkani is not a saudi citizen as he is from Rangoon, Burma originally

Assalaamu Alaykum
The grand mufti suggests the imams to the kings, and the king has the final choice, in some cases an imam is chosen due to the death of another imam as in the case of Sheikh Ali Jaber (RA) and Sheikh Shuraym, (REST OF COMMENT REMOVED BY ADMIN)

Assalaam u alaikum,
The comments here are getting out of hand. People have started to disrespect Imams, and thus some comments have been rejected, whereas others have been deleted partially. We seem to be forgetting that our Creator, Our Rabb, to whom belongs the heavens and earth and everything in it, chooses the Imams who will lead at His House and the Masjid of His Beloved Prophet Sallallahu alaihe wasallam. Yes, the King plays a part, but Allah instills in the King's heart who to choose as the Imam. In some cases, it can even be that the King may not like it, but a particular indiviudal becomes the Imam. Everything happens according to Allah's will. So if you want Sheikh Al-Arkani to become Imam, do dua to Allah. If YOU want to become imam, do dua to Allah. If its best for you, then Insha'Allah you will become Imam of Masjid Al-Haraam. If you don't, or if Sheikh Arkani doesn't become Imam, then know that Allah is the most Wise and whatever He has decided for us is best for us. I feel this subject no longer needs to be discussed. The answer to the original question is that Allah chooses. All subsequent comments to this post will be deleted as it only causes disrespect.
Jazka'Allah khair

my special thanks and prayers to HRStaff..
a timely response with a high degree of dignity..

really, people discuss something out of the syllabi...

i hope they will discuss more about quran and its teachings.. rather than playing like a fan of one perticular imam..

ALLAH CHOOSES WHOM HE WANTS AT HIS HOME.

WOW!

That was brilliantly said HRstaff!
The Imams are chosen by Allah and they deserve the utmost respect, if only you have been in their company, You would then be awed by their presence!

everything happens only by the will of Allah.

''Wa makaroo, wa makarAllah, wa Allahu khayrul makireen.''

Thanks.

yes, the imams are chosen by allah not the king,i totally agree with HRstaff. if an imam is chosen to lead prayers it's because Allah has accepted them and probably because they are really good people Allah has bestowed his mercy on. Sheikh shuraim is my fav though.:)

Why does shuraym not lead the dua? He hasn't done that for five years i think. whats the reason? hew make very good dua and very emotional but sudais is given the chance for that only.

Asalamualykum, May Allah bestow his infinite mercy on those who participate in bringing the Haramain experience to our homes from whereever we are. I am from England, UK and ever since I came back from Umrah last Ramadhan I have been on this website everyday (except when I was in I'tikaak these last ten days) and therefore it has become a part of me. Even in I'tikaaf I could not help but keep thinking about this website even in I'tikaaf. I pray and ask Allah SWT he forgives and showers his never ending mercy on all of us. That he continually gives the HR Staff the taufeeq to carry on this excellent work.

I dont think they chose the imams by Tajweed or good recitaction, but by knowladge. The person who has the most right to lead the prayer is an islamic scholor, not hafiz. And plus if it was by tajweed some of the imams would not have been picked.

I totally agree with HR staff and I further would like to clearify that we should see whether the imaam is form Saudi or not because it is not a person who chooses his birth place but it is Allah who does.
So discrimination on basis of birth place threatens the Islamic concept of universal muslim brotherhood. The criteria for superiority is Taqwa i.e piety.

no , the imam have 2 be saudi & not from other country ..

Salam to all,

Whoever is chosen as Imam is by the will of Allah (SWT) as rightly said by the HR staff.
We might make rules and try to judge a person but Allah knows best and chooses the right person.

I don't think the HR staff knows much about him. If you read earlier in the thread, they said that they aren't aware of him, but that doesn't mean he didn't lead there. Allah knows best

my simple and humble comment is that I think whoever choses the imaams to lead the salaah for the millions who are Guests of Allah then that person is guided by Allah who is the ultimate decider of this..
May Allah grant those who lead the Salaah of the Haramain long live and Barakah and also keep them on the straight path and guidance.. Ameen!
