Questions & Answers

This was posted on 11th Night Makkah Taraweeh as a Comment

This is my first time witnessing a 3 rakaat witir prayer.Alhamduillah.
I have two questions regarding this:

1) Can we perform this? what is the proposition? (etc:Hadis,Quran?)
2) Before we begin the prayer, we as usual have intended to perform a 2 rakaat witir prayer. In this case, will our prayer be accepted since the imam has not concluded a 3 rakaat prayer.

Dear brother,

The witr prayer is established from various ahaadeeth of the Beloved Prophet (6allalaahu 3layhi wa sallam)according to all the four schools of thought.

However, there is a differenc of opinion with regards how it should be offered.
Hence, according to the Hanafi mat'hab, it can only be offered as 3 rakaat with 1 salaam,

In the other mathaahib however, there is some leeway as to how these 3 rakaat can be offered.
generally 3 are offered with a salaam after 2 rakaats, nd then 1 rakah on its own. however, if offered otherwise, there is no harm in doing so.

According to the majority of hanafi scholars, for a hanafi to pray behind an imam who offers 2 rakaat and then th one, is impermissible, but for th latter to pray behind the former, there is nothing wrong.

And Allah knows best...whatever was wrong was from myslf & shaytaan, and whatever was right was from allah.

Witr prayer is part of the night prayer, but there is still a difference between them.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Witr is part of the night prayer, and it is Sunnah and it is the end of the night prayer, one rak’ah with which one concludes the night prayers at the end of the night, or in the middle of the night, or at the beginning of the night after ‘Isha’ prayer. You pray whatever you can, then you conclude it with one rak’ah. End quote.

Fataawa Ibn Baaz, 11/309

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The Sunnah – both in word and in deed – distinguishes between the night prayers and witr prayer. The scholars also distinguished between them with regard to the ruling and the way in which they are done.

With regard to differentiation made in the Sunnah, according to the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): How are the night prayers done? He said: “Two by two, then when you fear that dawn is about to break, pray Witr with one rak’ah.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari. See al-Fath, 3/20.

With regard to the way in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) differentiated between them in his actions, according to the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray when I was lying down across his bed. When he wanted to pray Witr, he would wake me up and I would pray Witr. Narrated by al-Bukhaari. See al-Fath, 2/487. Also narrated by Muslim (1/51) with the wording: “He used to offer his prayers at night when I was lying in front of him.” Then when only Witr was left, he would wake her up and she would pray witr. And Muslim also narrated (1/508) that she said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray thirteen rak’ahs at night, five of which were witr, in which he would not sit except at the end. And he narrated from her (1/513) that when Sa’d ibn Hishaam said to her: “Tell me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him),” she said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to pray nine rak'ahs during which he would not sit except in the eighth rak’ah, when he would remember Allaah and praise Him and call upon Him, then he would get up without saying the salaam, then he would stand and pray the ninth rak’ah, then he would sit and remember Allaah (dhikr) and praise Him and call upon Him, then he would say a tasleem that we could hear.”

With regard to the scholars’ differentiating between the ways in which witr and the night prayers are done, our Hanbali fuqaha’ have clearly stated that they are done differently. They said: The night prayers are done two by two, and they said concerning witr: witr may be prayed with five, or seven, rak’ahs, in which one does not sit except in the last one. If a person prays witr with nine rak’ahs, he should sit immediately after the eighth rak’ah and recite the tashahhud, then he should stand up before saying the salaam and do the ninth rak’ah, then he should say the tashahhud and the salaam. This is what was stated by the author of Zaad al-Mustaqni’. End quote.

Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 13/262-264.

With regards to your 2nd question, Allah knows best about the past but Witr is by 1 or 3 or 5 or 7 or 9 rakaat.. inshaAllah, next time, start it with 2 and then complete with 1..

brother, dont make intention of 2 or 3 rakaah, just make intention of witr behind the imam, now whether the imam prays 2 or 3 it wont make a differance on your part

anyway, i hope the following helps

Bismillah

Al-jawab billahi at-taufeeq (the answer with Allah's guidance)

Three Rakats only, according to Imam Abu Hanifah (RA):

It is reported from Sayyiduna Hasan al-Basri that there was general agreement of the early generations (Salaf) that Witr is 3 Rakats [this was reported by Ibn Abi Shayba in his Musannaf and by Imam Tahawi], and the great Faqih (jurist) of the Companions of the Prophet (Sallallaha Alaihi Wasallam), Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (Allah be pleased with him), said, “Witr is 3 rakats, like the Rakats of Maghrib,” and he said, “One Rakat does not fulfill it.” (Zayla`i, Tabyin al-Haqa’iq Sharh Kanz al-Daqa’iq, Nasb al-Raya)

It is agreed that there is no such thing as a one-Rakat prayer. You cannot, for example, pray 1 rakat Nafl for Allah.

To raise the hand till the ears upon the Takbeer of Qunoot and fold them afterwards, according to Imam Abu Hanifah (RA):

Aaisha (Radhiallaahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) used to perform 3 Rakats of Witr, and would only make Salam at the end.' (I'elaa-us-Sunan vol.6 pg.30; Karachi)

Abd al-Razzaq narrates that Zuhri narrates that Hammad narrates that Ibrahim narrates that Ibn Masood used to raise his hands in Witr then drop them after words. (Musannaf Abdur Razzaq Vol. 4 Pg. 325)

Abu Yusuf narrates that Abu Hanifa narrates that Talha narrates that Ebrahim al-Nakha’i said, “The hands will be raised in seven places. At the beginning of Salah, at the beginning of Qunoof of witr, in the two Eids, when maing Istilam of Hajr al-Aswad, at Safa and Marwah, at Arafat, and Muzdalifa, and the Jamarah. (Aathar Li Abi Yusuf Vol. 1 Pg. 105)

Muhammad narrates that Abu Hanifa narrates that Hammad narrates that Ibrahim said Qunoot in Witr is Wajib in Ramadan and out of Ramadan before Ruku’. When you intend to say Qunoot, say takbeer. When you intend to go into ruku say Takbeer again. Imam Muhammad says, “We hold this view and hands should be raise before Qunoot just as how they are raised at the beginning of Salah and then fold them and make dua. This is the view of Imam Abu Hanafi (ra). (Aathar Li Muhammad Ibn Hasan Vol. 1 Pg. 274)

(See also: I`laus Sunan Vol.6 Pg. 53, 58 , vol.1 Pg. 57, and Ahsanul Fataawa Vol. 3 Pg. 489)

To recite Dua Qunoot before Ruku:

Narrated 'Asim:

I asked Anas bin Malik about the Qunut. Anas replied, "Definitely it was (recited)". I asked, "Before bowing or after it?" Anas replied, "Before bowing." I added, "So and so has told me that you had informed him that it had been after bowing." Anas said, "He told an untruth (i.e. "was mistaken," according to the Hijazi dialect). Allah's Apostle recited Qunut after bowing for a period of one month." Anas added, "The Prophet sent about seventy men (who knew the Quran by heart) towards the pagans (of Najd) who were less than they in number and there was a peace treaty between them and Allah's Apostles (but the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men). So Allah's Apostle recited Qunut for a period of one month asking Allah to punish them." (referring to the qunootun naazilah) (Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 16, Number 116)

Allaama Ibn Hajar (R.A.) writes in his commentary on Bukhari, Fath al-Bari that after analysing all these narrations we learn that it was the normal practice to recite the Qunoot before Ruku.

However, on certain occasions (such as the befalling of a calamity, etc.) the Qunoot would be recited after Ruku. (vol. 1, pg. 291)

In Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah it is mentioned that for this very reason the Sahaaba-e-Kiraam (RA) used to recite the Qunoot before Ruku.

Is this right to pray 3 rakaat witr toghether? pls ans

Assalaam u alaikum,
Sheikh Sudais is a knowledgable person Masha'Allah. If he has led witr with three rakaats, then that means that it is part of the sunnah. Some hadith provided by some poeple above have proven it. I don't believe it is right that we get into intricate details on what is permissible or not as we (atleast not any of the staff members of HR) are not scholars. Thus, if it is part of the sunnah, it is permissible.
Jazka'Allah khair for all those who have answered with authentic hadith. I believe the question has been asnwered (i.e. there is more than one method of praying witr and Sheikh Sudais knows what he is doing :)
Assalaam u alaikum
