Pillarless expansion of Haram proposed
A video grab from Atkins’ clip shows how the Grand Mosque would look like after the proposed expansion.

JEDDAH: Architects and officials overseeing projects to expand the Grand Mosque are talking about a video clip that presents a novel way of expanding the massive prayer complex without using columns and disrupting the existing building.

The proposal is to be mooted by committees studying the expansion of the Grand Mosque. Expanding the mosque without pillars would give worshippers a clear and unobstructed view of the Kaaba and help maximize space.

The first phase of the new design will provide space for over two million worshippers, a number that will go up to five million on completion.

The new design will make expansion work possible without disrupting the existing building or obstructing the movement of pilgrims and worshippers inside.

The existing traditional gates of the Grand Mosque will also be preserved and the Islamic architecture of the mosque will be kept intact.

The new design includes the building of further floors with steps leading to them, and 18-meter high doors, which will be closed during the quieter seasons and opened during peak seasons to provide more space.

The design consists of numerous prayer halls that resemble people in prayer. The Grand Mosque will be easily accessible from surrounding areas. The entire building will be shaded and thermal engines will keep the Grand Mosque cool.

This design would eliminate the possibility of Tawaf on the 2nd or 3rd floors.

I think this was just a proposal, and saudi govt. following the proposal other than this. also brother rightly pointed out the non-possibilty of tawaf on first and second floor. I think this was the biggest flaw in this proposal

so are they going to have pillars to support the arc shape boards that show that each gate is or are they going to have that pillarless as well and how rare people that can not walk or even if they are on wheel chair if this plan of saudi govnt goes pass then how are people going to do tawaf on the
2nd & 3rd floor if they are trying to increase they space of praying. JZK.
